Not a lot of people noticed until recently, but sometime last week Taylor Swift deleted (or archived) all of her posts (ever) on Instagram and Twitter. Yep, all gone. It was all silent for a few days, and no one had any idea what was going on. In truth, everyone was in the same ambiguous position.
And then there was motion.
Three days ago a mute short clip came up on Taylor Swift’s Instagram and Twitter. It had no caption, but was simply a video of what appeared to be the tail of a snake. Two days ago, the middle section of a snake was posted, connecting in the Instagram feed with the video posted the other day. Then, yesterday, the face of the snake was posted, completing the triadic structure. The snake was striking. It was now clear what was going on…somewhat.
This is where you need some background knowledge. According to CNN Entertainment, “#TaylorSwiftIsASnake became a thing a few years ago as a diss against the singer, who has had a few feuds with fellow celebrities. The hashtag and the posting of snake emojis on Swift’s social media accounts reached a fevered pitch in the summer of 2016 with the confluence of several events.“
These several events include, firstly, her split from Calvin Harris after an almost year-and-a-half-long relationship; secondly, Swift revealed that she had written “This Is What You Came For” (performed by Calvin Harris and Rihanna) under a pseudonym name [Nils Sjoberg] and Calvin Harris was not happy that she was taking credit for the top-chart hit; [at this point Calvin Harris fans spammed Taylor Swift’s Instagram posts with the snake emojis] thirdly, came the whole thing with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (Kanye referenced Taylor in his song “Famous” which includes the line “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous”, while Taylor claimed she never gave him permission).
So what is Taylor Swift doing now? She is getting back at everyone who hated on her by particularly naming her a snake. This is a notion that thrills many—it even thrills me and I can’t say I’m necessarily a fan of her, but I’m not a hater either; I’m neutral, if that makes sense.
After the snake videos which clarified what Taylor was up to, she posted a picture that read “FIRST SINGLE OUT TOMORROW NIGHT” after which then came another post that unveiled the name of that single would be “Reputation”.
Our suspicions of what she could have been up to have now been utterly clarified—Taylor Swift is back on track with her new album which will come out November 10. The first single to be released, “Reputation”, will be out in just a few hours.
We are all just a bit hyped, admit it.
I do not own any of pictures used in this article.
